Configuring the Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP)

Incoming connection options

The following options define incoming connections that can be made to a bundle:

Use auto-detected PPP session
If set to Yes, an incoming PPP session is initiated using the name in an incoming authentication packet. If set to No, the incoming caller is expected to log in to initiate a PPP session. If a caller logs in, you can also choose to authenticate them by their authentication ID for CHAP or PAP. A caller can also be authenticated by specifying a caller ID if this information can be obtained from the physical device on which the call arrived. (For example, the caller ID for an ISDN channel is normally their telephone number. This service may be obtainable from your telephone company for a charge.)

Authentication ID
Click on Edit to define the authentication IDs of the incoming users that can use the bundle to set up a PPP link. (An authentication ID is the identity of the caller as determined from a received CHAP or PAP packet.) Such a user must successfully authenticate themselves using CHAP or PAP and their connection must use one of the link devices associated with the bundle. The authentication method(s) that are used for incoming users are configured in the global bundle.

NOTE: Authentication will be performed using CHAP in preference to PAP if both methods are enabled in the global bundle for incoming users.

Select Yes as the answer to the question Allow any valid authentication entry if you want to allow any caller who can be authenticated successfully to be able to use this bundle.

Select No as the answer to the question Allow any valid authentication entry if you want to enter the names of new users or to select the names of existing users from those listed.

To enter the details of a new user, click on Add, enter the details of their name, the protocol(s) that they can use to authenticate themselves, and their CHAP secret and/or PAP password.

To change the details of an existing user, select them from either list and click on Modify.

Choose the users that can use the bundle by selecting them in the Available names list, and click on Add >> to move them to the Selected names.

Login user name
Click on Edit to define the incoming PPP users that can log in to use the bundle to set up a PPP link. A PPP user must successfully authenticate themselves by logging in and their connection must use one of the link devices associated with the bundle.

Select Yes as the answer to the question Allow any PPP user if you want to allow any caller whose login shell is /bin/pppsh to be able to use this bundle.

Select No as the answer to the question Allow any PPP user if you want to enter the names of new users or to select an existing user from the pull-down list. To enter the details of a new user, click on Add, enter the details of their user name, user ID (a suitable value is suggested), and password, then click on OK.

Choose the PPP users that can use the bundle by selecting them in the Available PPP users list, and click on Add >> to move them to the Selected PPP users list. You can use the << Remove button to deselect users. To change a selected user's details, click on Modify.

Caller ID
A caller ID is the identity of the caller as determined by any call information that can be obtained from the physical layer, such as the telephone number at the remote end of the link.

Click on Edit to define the caller IDs which are permitted to set up a PPP link. The caller ID and link device must match one of those listed in the bundle.

To add a caller ID to the list, enter the number and click on Add.

To remove a caller ID from the list, select it and click on Delete.
