Configuring the Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP)

Outgoing connection options

The following options define outgoing connections that can be made from a bundle:

Remote system name
The name of a remote system by reference to its entry in the /etc/uucp/Systems file (see Systems(4bnu)). You can configure entries in this file by clicking on Edit to start the Dialup Systems Manager.

Method of initiating links
How an outgoing link is brought up. Possible values are:

automatically (on demand)
A PPP link and associated network interface is established automatically when a remote system needs to be accessed by a networking application. (If necessary, you can also bring it up using pppattach(1M).) The link remains established until it becomes idle for a certain time, or you take it down using pppdetach(1M). The link will be brought up again when needed by outgoing network packets. The PPP network interface remains in existence until the system is shut down or until you use pppdetach to take down the link.

WARNING: If you configure a link to be brought up automatically, any process that requires access to a non-local IP address may attempt to bring up the link if it is not already active. Actions that could bring up the link include resolving domain names to IP addresses, sending email, sending routing information, and synchronizing with time servers. If necessary, you can can configure a packet filter for the bundle to prevent outgoing packets to certain destination ports from bringing up the link.

manually (via pppattach)
pppattach(1M) is used to establish the PPP link to the remote system and the associated network interface. The link remains established until it becomes idle for a certain time, or you take it down using pppdetach(1M). This also removes the PPP network interface.
