Integrating software with UnixWare 7

Software packaging

The UnixWare 7 software management tools provide a framework that enables software and documentation to be consistently and reliably packaged, installed, removed, distributed, and maintained. Utilities are provided that automate many of the common administrative tasks associated with managing a large installed software base. This combination of a consistent software management framework and helpful package management utilities has distinct advantages over using archiving utilities such as cpio(1) or tar(1), or other available software management tools.

See ``Quick steps to packaging'' for a procedure that takes you through all the steps necessary to create a simple package using the UnixWare 7 pkg tools. We also recommend that you try the mkpkg utility provided on the Skunkware 7 Development Tools web site. The mkpkg utility further automates some packaging tasks (such as the setup of a packaging area) and provides additional helpful features.

For a complete discussion of how to package your software, see ``Packaging your software applications''.
