Introduction to using the system

Editing files

There are a range of editing programs that you can use to edit files, depending on the type of files you need to edit, and your personal preferences. The main editing tools provided with UnixWare are:

The vi and sed editors are command-line editors. That is, once you have started the editor, you enter commands which modify the file as you view it. You move the cursor to the position at which you wish to modify the file, then enter commands or use keystrokes to change the text. For information about vi, see ``A quick tour of vi''. For information about using sed, see sed(1).

ed is a line editor that is useful mainly for automated editing tasks. See ``Using ed''.

The desktop editor is a simple interactive editor. You can use the mouse to position the cursor, and to highlight text to delete or change. There are also search and replace functions, and basic formatting functions. See the CDE desktop online help for details.
